Why Everyone Should Watch the Documentary “Stutz”

As I was mindlessly scrolling Netflix one night, looking for another thing to keep my brain entertained, I stumbled upon a movie poster with Jonah Hill on the cover called “Stutz.” Now, after only seeing Jonah Hill on the cover and knowing his comedic background I assumed that this would be another light-hearted and potentially silly film…but it was in the documentary section. Thinking this was a bit odd, I utilized one of the many great features of this streaming platform to look into what this documentary could possibly be about.

The description reads as follow:

In candid conversations with actor Jonah Hill, leading psychiatrist Phil Stutz explores his early life experiences and unique visual model of therapy.”

Probably not what you were expecting- at least that’s how it was for me. So of course, I had to know more, and after watching this film I realized that it is actually really valuable information that everyone should hear.

Why you may ask?

In short, the documentary is Jonah Hill’s efforts to not only share the amazing story of Phil Stutz, but to also give every single person watching key tools in their mental health journey that can help anybody (struggling or not) with the many mental challenges we all often face. I think everyone needs to understand just how important that truly is. This celebrity is taking an amazing (and probably very expensive) mental health professional and giving all of us average joes the tools to live a healthier and happier life. All while in a cinematically beautiful and entertaining way AND on top of all that, getting to see a well-known actor discuss very vulnerable topics and learn things that you probably don’t know about most actors let alone people around you.

The relationship between Phil Stutz and Jonah Hill is also extremely admirable to watch. I personally believe that everyone can benefit from seeing a therapist and the patient-to-therapist relationship played out in this documentary I think is something that can help to normalize the stigma around going to therapy and can even help to make others feel more comfortable about their own mental health journeys, should they choose to seek help from a mental health professional.

In addition to that, I think this documentary is a great way to get valuable information about mental health without actually going to a therapist. Now again, my personal belief is that there is nothing wrong with therapy and everyone can benefit from. But I understand that it’s not always that easy for other people and also the fact that sometimes people cannot afford to see a mental health professional. I am not saying to put all your eggs in a basket and that this documentary will cure all your worries and mental health struggles, but I do think that watching this film can be extremely helpful and work towards giving everyone more/better coping mechanisms when certain mental health struggles may arise.

I have always been a fan of Jonah Hill, but this documentary has made me appreciate just how important and great it is when individuals with large platforms use those platforms to make positive differences.

If you have seen this documentary let me know what you think! And if not, check it out!

Always,

Maura
